Feeding our Protection Dogs
Our Family Protection Dogs are elite athletes with superior breeding; their diet is of the highest importance in our program. What our Czech Shepherds eat directly affects their overall health, weight, immune system, longevity and energy level. As soon as our future protection dogs arrive as young puppies, we begin feeding them the highest quality diet. We start all dogs on one of the best commercial dog foods in the country, Farmina, which we use as a training reward, and we incorporate raw and whole ingredients/supplements into each dog’s daily meals to ensure that they feel their best every day while growing and training to be guard dogs.
As our Czech Shepherds grow
By the time our Czech German Shepherd puppies reach 12 months of age, we are primarily feeding them a balanced raw diet as that is the healthiest and least processed food we can provide for them. Why is this important? Through balanced raw feeding, we’re able to:
- Eliminate the potential health side effects such as inflammation, gut imbalances and food intolerances that are all too common in dogs who eat commercial diets; aka: kibble.
- We are able to ensure each dog maintains its ideal weight which is key in injury prevention.
- You are what you eat! When our dogs feel their best, they train to their full potential.
- And finally, we’re lowering or eliminating medical expenses throughout the dog’s life. Studies reveal that dog owners who solely feed commercial dog food spend an average of $2000 or more annually in vet bills that are directly related to their dog’s diet, compared to owners who feed minimally processed dog food. Examples of these diet-related expenses are: skin/coat issues, allergies, dental issues, obesity, inflammation and immune issues.
The truth about optimal protection dog nutrition
The truth is that optimal nutrition cannot be found in a single bag of food, no matter the brand. That does not mean that dogs have to be fed a raw food diet in order to be healthy, but we strongly believe that protection dogs should have as much raw/fresh food as possible in their diet to keep them their healthiest.
Supplements
Supplements are also extremely important! These days they are commonly used as management for current symptoms a dog is exhibiting, such as giving a senior dog glucosamine. However, supplements are much more powerful and effective when given as a preventative measure! Our Family Protection Dogs receive age-appropriate supplements sourced from whole and all-natural ingredients while being raised by their trainers. Examples of these supplements include turmeric, glucosamine, vitamin C, vitamin E, MSM and krill oil.
